It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and great friend Kyle Ellington, Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging for #LosAtléticos.
Every day is unique, but I am tasked with collaborating at all levels of the organization to develop, implement and track progress on ongoing strategic initiatives that enrich the Oakland A’s approach to diversity, equity and inclusion .
I support our organization’s internal employee resource groups and diversity councils, cultural recognition and celebrations, employee engagement, recruiting and sourcing, supplier diversity, and DE&I training programs. Employee Engagement – Employee resource groups and affinity groups help foster a culture of inclusion and engagement, which increases employee retention.
Innovation – A diverse and inclusive workforce enhances creativity, innovation and openness.
Performance – Gender and ethnically diverse companies outperformed their peers by 25% and 36%, respectively. Diversity provides a range of skills. Through an integrated and diverse environment, a broader perspective can be integrated into brainstorming, problem solving and developing new business ideas.
Brands – Consumers are more likely to support social causes and buy brands. 71% of fans support teams and athletes who speak out on issues of social and racial justice – ESPN Poll 2020. I don’t think it’s a challenge. I see this as an opportunity to learn from others and educate employees about the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.
For any organizational change or initiative, it is imperative to have a strategic plan that is supported by all levels of the organization. We have built a solid foundation with the Oakland Athletics and we are determined to continue on that path. One of our earliest accomplishments was the creation of the DEI Mission Statement by our Diversity Working Group. The Diversity Working Group, which includes the executive team, meets quarterly.
This working group brings together diverse leaders who will strategically implement DEI efforts and embed inclusive practices across the organization.
